Humorist Harry Golden once quipped, “The history of Jews in America, from sha sha to cha cha.” The exhibition Jews on Vinyl is full of Latin-Jewish, bagels-and-bongos audio treasures, and this listening party celebrates everything from Yiddish mambos to Fiddler on the Roof charangas. Come hear how Tito Puente ended up playing the Catskills, how a Brooklyn Jew became known as El Judio Maravilloso, and much more. Presented in association with the Idelsohn Society for Musical Preservation.

Make it a night! Light supper and cocktails will be available for purchase. And be sure to visit the exhibition; Jews on Vinyl will remain open to attendees until 9:30 p.m.

MAZEL TOV, MIS AMIGOS IS PRESENTED AS PART OF “VIVA!” AN ONGOING SKIRBALL INITIATIVE THAT EXPLORES THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN JEWISH AND LATIN AMERICAN CULTURES THROUGH LECTURES, CONVERSATIONS, AND PERFORMING, VISUAL, AND MEDIA ARTS.

Call for Art Entries: Be’chol Lashon | Shemspeed

Artists! Be’chol Lashon and Shemspeed are looking for you!

Open call to Jewish artists from racially or ethnically diverse backgrounds or Jews whose work has an emphasis on expanding notions of what Jewish ‘looks’ like. Pieces should be 2D and no larger than 3 x 4 ft. Your work will be featured as part of the Shemspeed Summer Festival and will be displayed at the Gallery Bar on Orchard Street in New York.

The exhibit will be held on July 29, 2010. Entries are due June 30th (!). There is no entry fee. Zip. Nada. Submissions should be sent in a compressed .zip file and can be submitted via free file services, yousendit.com or www.sendspace.com. Submissions should be sent in .jpg format and mailed to submissions@shemspeed.com

So all you ‘artistes’ get cracking because this is one heck of an opportunity to display your ‘skillz’ and you don’t have a lot of time.

Judios Latinos presents Feria Artistica: Duality

92YTribeca is proud to partner with Judios Latinos for a very special exhibition of work from emerging Latin artists. Based on the conflict that arises from belonging to two worlds at once, DUALITY showcases multi-disciplinary work from:

The opening reception will be on Saturday, June 12 from 8-10pm and is free to the public. The exhibit will run from June 12th until Aug 1st and is co-sponsored by the 92Y Resource Center for Jewish Diversity.

Get Down, Moses: Dance Party Showcases Black Singers of Jewish Songs

Hear Johnny Mathis sing “Kol Nidre,” Aretha Franklin interpret “Swanee” (a song made famous by American Jewish entertainer Al Jolson), and Lena Horne leave her mark on “Hava Nagila”!

Organized in conjunction with the Jews on Vinyl exhibit, Get Down, Moses is an exploration of the musical relationship between Jews and African Americans. Thursday’s listening party—a mix of song and story—will celebrate that often joyous, often complicated history, focusing on the hidden tradition of African-American artists singing Jewish songs. Presented in association with the Idelsohn Society for Musical Preservation.
