The “Los Angeles Sephardic Jewish Film Festival” was established in 1997 by the Sephardic Educational Center (SEC) to heighten the awareness and understanding of the rich historical and cultural diversity of the Sephardic Jewish People. The Cinema Sepharad Award is presented at the Festival to individuals for outstanding achievement in the entertainment industry and an affinity to the Sephardic community. Other awards are presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to preserving Sephardic Heritage.

The Sephardic Educational Center

The international Sephardic Educational and Cultural Center (SEC) was established to meet the educational, cultural and religious needs of sephardim throughout the diaspora. Embracing all Jews, the SEC’s goal is the return of our young people, through educational, cultural and social programs, to their spiritual roots, strengthening their Jewish identity and developing their leadership skills to support their local communities. With headquarters in the heart of Jerusalem, and chapters around the world, the sec spreads a message of unity, tolerance and tradition to the Jewish people.

Sabrina Sojourner led the group in song and prayer as everyone was guided through the past year and looked forward to 5771.  The adults gathered sticks, blades of grass or leaves and cast them into the water in our symbolic tashlich ritual.  The kids had fun just throwing the sticks into the water!

The afternoon ended with everyone taking a turn blowing the shofar. The group all had such a lovely time that everyone wants to gather again before the end of 2010.  They are also hoping to do some type of social justice activity as a group.  Stay tuned for more information!!

it was exactly a year ago tonight that MaNishtana was first born.

a ninth of av where instead of sitting around and bemoaning not only the past, but the present as well, i decided to try and actually do something about it. and since then there’s been the talks in philly, the interview with bechol lashon, the spot at jewcy.com, a ton of comments, some youtube videos, and my recently acquired and unnervingly uncanny ability to now be spotted in the most random of places by the most random of ppl.[like in a random turkish bar in an obscure location of williamsburg at 1:00 in the morning].

for a second, i really thought i mightve been accomplishing something.

then came the jewish multiracial network retreat. it was awesome. mindblowing even. at a point during one of the workshops, i zoned out and looked around at the roomfull of these typically “black” and  “urbanly” dressed ppl and had a “holy crap! everyone here is jewish!” moment.

lovely.

when it was over, and i was back home, i was strutting around the city WISHING someone would look at me crosswise. id’ve punched a horse in the face just to fight the cop riding it. THATS how pumped i was…and then came the crash…the somber sobering realization that, after having spent an entire weekend with jews who looked like me, didnt question me, who i didnt have to fight or prove myself to, after a weekend of being “just jewish” and “just black” and “just me” all rolled into one, after a weekend of having and wholly being part of an actual COMMUNITY…after all that i was home…and realized that i didnt actually have ANY of that in real life…

and thats when i was ready to hang it all up. i felt like id been playing at revolutionary. b/c id really had no concept of what it was i was fighting for, what it was i wanted to exist. and once id had the merest taste of it, i was suddenly struck with how far that goal is and how massive a task it was i was trying to chew at. its like i was fighting for a right to swim in a lake only to get there and realize it was an ocean.

but then luckily i discovered that in a way i still DID have a community. not as close or accessible as it’d been that weekend, but still there. and im really grateful for those ppl who were there to talk me down from the metaphorical roof [you know who you are and i love you guys].

so here i am, a year older, a year wiser, and with a more concrete goal than id ever dreamt of having a year ago, and with a more acute sense of the 9th of av than i did a year ago as well.

so its time to kick things up a notch.

THE SEPHARDIC ANOUSIM was written to fill a void in the subject of the Anousim (Hebrew for ‘coerced’). The Anousim are descendants of forcibly converted Jews of Spain and Portugal (historically known as Marranos). Many tens of thousands of Jews were converted in the 14th and 15th century due to violence and religious intimidation. However, many of these Jews secretly concealed their Judaic observances while acting like they were newly baptized Catholics. Today, descendants of those converted Jews are increasingly “coming out” only to find themselves lost in a sea of complicated Jewish laws,  being deceived by missionaries and are frustrated in seeking to fully understand the history of their own people.

Alfassa’s talk will include a PowerPoint presentation. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The author will be available to personally sign copies of the book for purchase.
